Open Loop Systems Vs. Closed Loop Systems - Which One is Best for You

CONTACT US TODAY TO INQUIRE MORE ABOUT THE SERVICES WE HAVE TO OFFER

There are two types of systems you can choose from for a water well system: Open loop and closed loop. There are pros and cons to both systems and deciding which one is right for you depends on a few variables like budget, space, the amount of available water and personal preference.

Open loop systems:

Open loop systems pump water from the well, through the system, into your home which is eventually returned to the earth. Historically, open loops systems were the most common type of system (recently, closed loop systems became far more common). Open loop systems are typically less expensive than closed loop systems, which makes them more desirable to most people. Another benefit of an open loop system is that the water in the well is kept at a consistent temperature. Open loop systems need a large supply of water for them to work properly because the water being used is being put back into ground. This source of the water needs to be clean because there can be some water quality concerns with this type of system. A drawback of the open loop system is you will most likely need to enlarge your pressure tank to ensure ample water supply.  If you have a river, lake, pond or stream near you, you will be able to use that to discharge your water into. If that option doesn’t exist, you will have to install a second well to collect your discharged water. This needs to be done by a professional to ensure there is enough capacity to address the used water. Open loop systems have their pros and cons, but many people chose this option because of the lower cost and the consistency of the water temperature.

Closed loop systems:

Closed loop systems entail a continuous flow of water through the same pipes and the heat pump. Closed loop systems can be placed horizontally or vertically in your yard provided there is adequate soil and the right amount of room. In this system, there is an antifreeze solution that helps transfer the temperature of the ground to the heat pump. Many people prefer a closed loop system because it can be discreetly placed in their yard.  One drawback to a closed loop system is that it costs more.  Another thing to consider about closed loop systems is that you need a larger pump for it to work properly. An option that is not available for everyone is to use a pond nearby to loop the system into. The pond would need to be at least six feet deep and generally close to your home or business. Closed loop systems are slowly becoming more and more popular than the open loop systems, but specific needs and preferences often drive the final choice.

There are pros and cons associated with both systems and the decision for one versus the other often comes down to individual circumstances.  Call the experts at Suburban Well Drilling and we will help you make the choice that is best for you.  For over 70 years Chicagoans have trusted us with their water well solutions.  Call today to learn why.
